What is Sustainability?
There are many definitions for sustainability. If you ask ten people you might get ten different answers. However, the standard definition of sustainability published in the 1987 Brundtland Report entitled “Our Common Future” (World Commission on Environment and Development) defines sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

While sustainability has its roots in the environmentalism of the past, it has evolved in response to modern forces such as limited resources, urbanization, expanding scientific knowledge and technology, growing social awareness, health and safety imperatives and the changing economics of the 21st Century.

In practical terms, sustainability is defined as an approach which is profitable, environmentally sound (i.e. minimizes harm to the environment and maintains basic natural resources) and is beneficial to the community (i.e. demonstrates support of the community and the fair treatment of all people involved in the system).

Who runs Green Planet?
The Green Planet program is a non-profit company based in Fountain Hills, Arizona USA.

The program is administered by an Advisory Board made up of farmers, environmental scientists, environmental lawyers, medical professionals and businessmen. Board members bring their expertise from different fields. Our board includes members with extensive experience in natural, sustainable world-wide agriculture. If you would like to be consider for a seat on our Advisory Board, please contact Perry Gooch, President of Green Planet.

How much does it cost to be a Certified Green Planet?
In 2007 we have instituted a $100 application fee during Step 3 of our certification process to cover our basic costs of overhead, testing, mailings and public outreach. Free-will donations have sustained the organization since its inception. Once accepted as a Green Planet Certified Farm a fee schedule will be proposed and agreed upon by both parties based on size and breadth of individual farms.
